Born 1918 in Springfield, he began piano lessons at age 4 and was playing trumpet with the age of 11 years. He studied music at Southwest Baptist University and moved to Los Angeles in 1938 to work in Hollywood. Buddy Baker joined Disney in 1954 to assist George Bruns (Pirates of the Caribbean). "I came to Disney to help out for two weeks," Buddy once said, "and I ended up staying 29 years." (He and George were the sole composers for Disneyland for the park's first 10 years.)
He wrote scores and songs for a wide variety of Disney television series, live action and animated films, including the Mickey Mouse Club, Zorro, Davy Crockett, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, the three original Winnie the Pooh animated featurettes, The Fox and the Hound animated feature, and the animated featurette Donald in Mathmagic Land.
Prior to Disney, he wrote arrangements for many big bands, including Stan Kenton, Harry James, Phil Harris and Jack Teagarden and also worked on numerous radio shows, including The Bob Hope Show and The Jack Benny Show.
Buddy's favourite attraction was the French Pavillion movie Impressions de France where he combined classical french masterpieces with own compositions, all played by a 100-piece orchestra in London.
After retiring in 1983 as Hollywood's last on-staff studio composer, Buddy still continued to work with Disney, composing music for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh at the Magic Kingdom, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Sindbad's Seven Voyages at Tokyo DisneySea.
